Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters
New research suggests that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using these drugs should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
